Nike loved the 2015 Nike Air Kicks worn in the 1989 hit movie Back To The Future II movie so much that they decided to create an 'exact replica', the 2011 NIKE MAG.
The shoes feature a glowing LED panel, electroluminescent outsole and Nike logo, space-age materials and a rechargeable internal battery that lasts 4-5 hours per use. Unlike the video, the shoes do not automatically lace-up.
Nike teamed up with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's disease research to auction off 150 pairs of 2011 NIKE MAG's per day for ten days (up until September 18) with all the 'net' proceeds going to the foundation. Currently the shoes are bidding for around $9,000 a pair and are going up.
Available on eBay.
Michael J. Fox made an appearance on David Letterman to unveil the sneakers and discuss his foundation for Parkinson's disease research.
Nike wrote in a press release, "The NIKE MAG is no longer the 'greatest shoe never made.' The mythical shoe that originally captured the imagination of audiences in Back to the Future II is being released – and they’re here to help create a future without Parkinson’s disease. The 2011 NIKE MAG shoe was designed to be a precise replica of the original from Back to the Future II. The aesthetic is an exact match, down to the contours of the upper, the glowing LED panel and the electroluminescent NIKE in the strap. The 2011 NIKE MAG illuminates with the pinch of the “ear” of the high top, glowing for five hours per charge."
The sneakers are supposedly going to be commercially available in, you guessed it, 2015.
In May of 2009 Nike filed a patent for an auto-lacing pair of shoes.
